Language and Communication essays Throughout Foe, J.M. Coetzee emphasizes the importance of language and communication in human interaction. Language and communication are reccurring themes that are personified mainly through the character of Friday. Friday is mute and not able to speak because he has no tongue. Though it is not clear how Friday lost his tongue, it is certain that Friday cannot speak. However, Susan Barton is able to speak as she possesses the means necessary for language, but she lacks communication skills. Though Cruso does not bother teaching Friday writing, Susan attempts to communicate with Friday but is not able to get through to him. Coetzee emphasizes the importance of language and communication through two central characters; Friday is the one not able to physically speak, however Susan truly lacks the necessary skills to communicate. Throughout the early stages of the novel, Coetzee shows that Friday is not able to speak and thus Susan dehumanizes him. Even though Coetzee never clarifies the true means by which Friday lost his tongue, it is obvious nonetheless that Friday is unable to speak. Susans first thought about Fridays inability to speak was that Friday was like a dog (21). Susan is baffled by Fridays silence and compares him to a dog. Though Cruso believes Friday has no need for words, Susan attempts to communicate once they have escape from the island. Susan has trouble teaching Friday words such as spoon and decides that perhaps after years of speechlessness the very notion of speech may be lost to him (57). Susan has lost hope of teaching Friday to communicate, however she continues to talk to Friday to educate him out of his so called darkness and silence, possibly because it gives her the satisfaction that she is making good on her less than ideal circumstances. The summer before Scout starts school she and her brother make a new friend, Dill. After several stories Dill becomes fascinated with the Radley house, where Mr. Nathan Radley lives with his brother "Boo", who hasn't been seen for years. When Scout starts school in the fall she and Jem find presents left for them in a knot hole of a tree in the Radley's front yard. The next summer when Dill comes back the three kids act out Boo's "life". When Atticus becomes aware of this he puts a end to it right away. On the last day of Dill's visit the three kids go to the Radley's house hope to "sneak a peak". When they hear a gun shot they run and crawl out from underneath a fence, where Jem loses his pants. When Jem returns for them they are mended up and hanging on the fence. When fall returns the presents return, but eventually Mr. Radley fills the hole up with cement. Shortly after that there is a fire at a neighbors. While scout was watching the fire someone had came up and put a blanket on her shoulders. When Jem is convinced it was Boo he tells his father about everything from the pants to the presents in the tree. Atticus agrees to defend an African American man, Tom Robinson, who was accused of raping a white woman. Since Atticus had taken the case his kids were tormented by the kids at school. They were even tormented by their family while celebrating Christmas at Finch Landing. The next summer Aunt Alexandria came to live with Atticus, Jem, and Scout. That same summer Dill had ran away from his home to Maycomb. The night before Tom's trial a mob had gathered around his jail cell. When the three kids arrived Scout had convinced the mob to leave. However, there were cases using other methods of suicide attempts too. An assessment of reasons for committing suicide highlighted social pressures (30%) and failure in relationships (30%) as the most common ones. Other reasons like family and economic conditions were also reported. The most common impact of suicide attempts was greater depression, reported by almost 74% of the psychiatrists. This could probably be due to stigma and fear of facing the society and family members. Fear and avenging behavior have also been noticed. Increased attachment towards family was reported by few psychiatrists. The outcome of the survey pointed that depression leading to suicide was more common among adolescent females. This survey indicates that suicides attempts were reported maximum among the girls between the age group of 15-25 years, as this is the age where female face a lot of problems and pressure from school, university, their economic condition, love failures or their general hormonal changes, and even sexual harassments.
